These last couple of months have been unexpectedly busy, both work-wise and emotionally. I traveled to Salt Lake City and Boise in October to work on My Plain Jane with Brodi and Cynthia, did some book festivals, a couple of school visits, and also took a new author photo (it was time).
But something happened in September. On the 19th, Hubs and I noticed Kippy had decided not to eat, and she was investigating unusual places in the house. We decided to take her to the vet if things didn’t look up soon. That night, I managed to get her to eat a few bites of chicken, but only if I hand-fed the pieces to her. I thought that was a good sign.
The next morning, on Setember 20th, I woke up to find her already gone.
My heart is still broken with the loss. Kippy was such a special cat, and I loved her so, so much. I know a lot of you did, too.
We were a cat-less house for about a month before Hubs and I decided we were deeply unhappy with that situation. We looked around at the local shelters and applied to adopt a kitten. It took a week, but we were approved and . . . they asked if we’d adopt a second kitten as well. A sister. She’d been adopted out already, but was returned two weeks later when the student’s parents persuaded him that having a kitten was too expensive. We couldn’t stand the thought of leaving her alone, so we agreed.
On October 26, we took Hush and Hildy home.
It’s been so much fun to watch them play with each other, learning their personalities and favorite perches. I still miss Kippy with all my heart, and I actually had to pause writing this so I could have a good cry, but Hush and Hildy are easy to fall in love with.
What I’ve been working on: I’ve been finishing things!
First, I finished my final draft of BEFORE SHE IGNITES. (Did you know Cell Story/Ceiling Water has a title? Because it totally does. And you can add it on Goodreads.) The next step is copyedits, followed by pass pages in a few months. I can’t wait to see how this book gets formatted for the page!
And also, I just finished my chapters of My Plain Jane! Victory! Now to begin revision. And more revision. And more revision. Actually, though, I like revising. Revision is where the magic happens.
And finally, I’m working on my first draft of Fallen Isles 2. Scrivener says I have about 23,000 words, which is almost a fourth of the way finished, if it’s the same size as BSI. We’ll see, though. It still feels like the beginning.
What I’ve been reading: I’ve been pretty bad about getting through books. Story of this year, I know. But here’s what I read:
- The Glass Spare by Lauren DeStefano (manuscript): Lauren has such a vivid, lovely voice in all her books, and this one was no exception. One of my favorite aspects of this one was how everything is more complicated than it first appears. (Coming Fall 2017)
- The Reader by Traci Chee: Few books are such joys to read — at least for me. But this one absolutely was. I loved all the characters, the world, the writing . . . basically everything about this book. It hit that sweet spot of thoughtful and fun.
- Blood Rose Rebellion by Roselyn Eves (ARC): This book excelled in moodiness and manners. (Coming March 28, 2017)
What I’ve been watching: Hubs and I watched a lot, including LUKE CAGE, THE FLASH, ARROW, SUPERGIRL, LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, and now we’re rewatching (to prepare for the new-to-us seasons of) VAMPIRE DIARIES and THE ORIGINALS.
What I’ve been yarning: Socks, of course.
I’ve been trying to knit the same dragon scale mitts for five million years.
I knit tiny pants for my baby nephew.
What Katniss has been up to: Katniss was excited about the kittens at first. Now she’s realized they aren’t as excited about her as she is them, so her enthusiasm has cooled. But she did get her own cat bed out of the deal, as the kittens don’t use it.
And hey, look, a picture of her while she’s awake!
What the kitties have been up to: They are kittens. This morning, I found them looking at my email. The other day, Hush turned on the PS4. I regularly find them in Katniss’s cage (sometimes with Katniss, sometimes without), and they eat like cat food will go out of style. They run around like a herd of buffalo in the morning, sleep all day, and resume their buffalo activities in the evening before bed.
Other things you might be interested in: I shared the title for my next book!
And I’m not going to show you anything, but I’ve totally seen cover comps. You guys. This book. It’s going to have such a gorgeous cover you’ll lose every EVEN you ever had. The designer is Joel Tippie, who did the INCARNATE covers, so you know it’s going to be stunning. I can’t wait to see the final thing. As for when you’ll get to see? My guess is March-ish, but I’m not totally sure on that.
In other news, MY LADY JANE was listed as one of Publisher’s Weekly’s best teen books of the year. I can hardly believe I’m seeing her up there with such an amazing selection of books.
All right, I need to play Skyrim write my book.
